I have already sounded out several players with regard to building up a limited opening and defence repetoire and had mixed response. It seems to me that opening lines from e4 can lead to complications and traps which most of us have little time or, perhaps, the ability to memorise in detail - certainly true in my case! I had tentatively been looking at the English Opening c4, but then discovered that this can lead to many transpositions back into the e4 lines that one may wish to avoid. A good strategy, therefore, would seem to be to adopt an opening where as White you could avoid the volatile lines of e4, that hasn't got many variations and not many transposition lines. The Reti perhaps?? Similar remarks apply to the Defences. Alekhine's Defence perhaps? What I should ideally like would be two good openings for White:perhaps The Reti (Nf3) and the English (c4) For Defences: Alekhine (Nf6) against e4 and Grunfeld (Nf6) against d4. Any comments and advice would be very welcome.
